（布城8日訊）青年及體育部長凱里說，政府考慮重新調查國家銀行在1991至1993年因為外匯交易損失440億令吉一事。

他說，今日在內閣會議中有提及重新調查此案的可能性，有者認為必須調查以確定是否有人掩蓋這項醜聞，下周的內閣會議將會再討論。

「這件事必須仔細調查，因為超過20年前的事件，涉及的人士已經去世，其中包括當時的國行總裁丹斯里嘉化胡先。因此，內閣下周將會再度討論這件事，想出最好的方法以便能夠釐清當時事情的原貌，了解究竟是否有掩蓋事實的可能性。」

他指出，內閣知道國行和時任總裁在外匯交易中虧損，但是有可能虧損的數額比報告中的數額更多。

「如今的問題是，當時所虧損的數額是否如國行前助理總裁拿督阿都慕勒所說的比報告中所列明的數額虧損更多。

我們必須重新檢視這件事，了解是否有人掩蓋事實，如果是的話，究竟何人涉及、何人下指示，這是最重要的問題，我們現在必須確定的問題。」

他指出，內閣會議中有討論一些人的建議，包括設立皇委會調查在1991至1993年期間外匯交易損失100億美元一事，時任首相是敦馬哈迪。

他說，這件事必須受到關注，因為這項醜聞是一個國家銀行有史以來蒙受最多的損失。

PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet will discuss again next week the allegedloss of RM44 billion incurred by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) throughforeign exchange trading from 1991 to 1993.

「It will think of the best way to get a clearer picture onwhether there was a cover-up of the scandal,」 Youth and SportsMinister Khairy Jamaluddin said yesterday.

He said the possibility of reopening the investigation wasraised at the cabinet meeting yesterday. Also discussed was theneed to obtain confirmation on whether there was a cover-up of thescandal by certain individuals.

He added that the cabinet took note of the loss of nationalfunds through foreign exchange (forex) trading, as acknowledged byBNM and its governor at the time, but what needed to be revealedwas the possibility of a bigger loss than what wasreported.

「The question now is whether the loss was as reported or biggerthan that stated by former BNM assistant governor Abdul MuradKhalid recently.

「What should be thought about is whether we need to look at thecase again and to ascertain whether there was a cover-up orattempts to close the case.

「And if there was a cover-up, who were involved and who orderedit? These are important questions which need answers now,」 he toldreporters after a function.

Khairy was asked whether the cabinet meeting had discussed thecalls made by certain quarters for the government to set up a royalcommission of inquiry to investigate the loss of US billionincurred by BNM through forex trading from 1991 until 1993 duringthe premiership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Recently, Murad revealed that the central bank was from 1991until 1993 involved in high-risk speculative forex trading,resulting in a loss bigger than the amount reported.

Khairy said the matter would be studied thoroughly as itinvolved an incident or scandal that happened over 20 yearsago.

He said the matter had to be addressed as the scandal had causedone of the biggest losses in the history of the country』s centralbank.
