PSA Group Confirms Bidding For Proton

The back and forth surrounding the bid for a 51 percent stake inProton has reached a new milestone with PSA Group now confirmingthat they have submitted an official bid to the local carmaker, according to a report by Automotive NewsEurope.

The report also quotes a PSA spokesperson as saying, "PSAGroup made an offer and is willing to go further. We have noadditional comment at this stage."

This puts the PSA Group in a potential bidding war with China』sZhejiang Geely Holding Group, over Proton and its rights over LotusCars. Geely is reported to have submitted a bid forProton as well, but this has yet to be officially acknowledged byofficial sources. DRB-Hicom Berhad who owns Proton, has yet toofficially comment on bids it has received for Proton or on whosubmitted those bids.

The PSA Group is also in negotiations withGeneral Motors (GM) to acquire the Opel and Vauxhall brands, a movethat would see PSA become the second largest car manufacturer inEurope, after Volkswagen. However, the deal with GM should have nobearing over the Proton bid, as both the Opel and Vauxhall brandshave limited presence outside Europe.

Automotive News Europe also speculates that the biggestincentive for PSA would be Proton』s underutilised Tanjung Malimplant – which will give the company a solid manufacturing andexport base in the Southeast Asian region.

This also corroborates with PSA』s aim to strengthen its vehicleassembly operations in Vietnam. Yesterday, PSA inked a dealwith local partner THACO (Truong Haï Auto Corporation), toaccelerate the development of their activities in Vietnam bycommitting local assembly and marketing of two new SUVs to beproduced in 2017, by the THACO plant in Chulai (Quang Namprovince).

Separately, we had reported earlier, that a twist in proceedingsidentified Geely as being firmly interested inBritish sports car specialist, Lotus Cars, as opposed to acontrolling stake in Proton.

However, this would conflict a later report, that Geely isseeking a partnership with Proton, with aims toboost its presence in right-hand drive markets, and offered up itssmall-car technology to sweeten the deal.

On 12 December 2013, General Motors announced it was selling its7% stake in PSA Peugeot Citroën.

In 2014, Dongfeng Motors, the Chinese partnerthat builds PSA cars in China, and the French government each tooka 13% stake in PSA, in a financial rescue operation, reducing thePeugeot family share from 25% to 14%.

On 14 February 2017 PSA consider in taking over all OpelBusiness from GM, after GM reported a loss of US$ 257 millions fromits European operations on 2016, sixteenth consecutive loss-makingyear for GM in Europe, bringing its amount losses on the continentsince 2000 to more than US$ 15 billions.
